Lonnie King's Trip Reports

Cle Elum, WA

June 2007

July 2007 -- Part One

July 2007 -- Part Two

We arrive in Cle Elum wondering if the re-opened Stampede Pass route is actually being used and then we saw this terribly overpowered and underweight train come rushing through on the old Northern Pacific track. It is not shown here but there were, if I remember correctly, about nine 3000+HP units on the head end of about a 35 car train of empties!
We were very glad to arrive in South Cle Elum at the Iron Horse B&B to the Mel Faudree caboose which were to be our lodgings for the evening:

After a fine breakfast by Chef Doug, Mary’s husband ...

... I took photos of one of the rooms in the original Milwaukee Road bunkhouse:

as well as a photo of the outside:
Then I took photos of the four “cabeese” they also have and use for accommodations:

We walked to the depot site and took the walking tour around the historical site:

As you can tell, we are dealing with substation:

The depot has been rebuilt to as closely as possible be as it was at the height of operations:

Our tour finished, we returned to the old Bunkhouse for some photos and to pack:

Before leaving I took more photos of our caboose:
